“Symbiotic Symmetries” is my latest series that explores the fascinating world of colonisers: lichen and moss. These tiny organisms play a crucial role in creating environments where life can begin to flourish. Over the years, I have meticulously photographed and documented lichen and mosses, but this winter has been particularly exceptional, yielding some stunning close-ups of these resilient colonisers.
Lichen, a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, is especially captivating. Often found on rocks, these organisms are pioneers in plant colonisation, laying the groundwork for more complex ecosystems. Their role as fundamental building blocks within an ecosystem cannot be overstated.
In "Symbiotic Symmetries," I have integrated flowers, trees, plants, insects, and humanity, all enveloped by lichen-like creations or structures that form the backbone of each composition. The patterns in my work are inspired by my long-standing interest in fractal geometry, reflecting the intricate and interconnected relationships within nature and the delicate balance of life.
Each of these paintings are created with delicate layers of paint that create detail and a depth of colour, bringing the beauty of nature and a sense of peace to your home that you can enjoy every day.
