About this painting:
This painting is a celebration of nature’s intricate web of life, captured through the powerful symbolism of a single tree. At its heart, central branches cradle a serene landscape of hills and a lone tree, an ecosystem within an ecosystem. Surrounding this core are branches adorned with flowers, leaves, a human face, and a skull, representing the cycle of life and death, and the interdependence of all living things.
Trees are often underestimated in the landscape, yet they are vital sanctuaries. An oak tree alone can support up to 2,300 species, with 300 entirely dependent on it. This artwork pays homage to these majestic organisms, which not only host countless life forms but also shape the very environment around them.
The Tree of Life series was born from a lifelong fascination with trees. Growing up among Hampshire’s hangers, wooded slopes where trunks towered above, I was immersed in their grandeur. My university peers affectionately called me the “mad tree lady,” a nickname that reflects my deep-rooted passion. Now working from my Sussex studio, I find inspiration in the ancient oaks that encircle the fields, especially in spring when wild garlic and bluebells transform the woods into a sensory feast.
Each painting in this series is a meticulous labour of love, created in ink or oil over weeks or months. Through intricate details of flora and fauna, I aim to honour the beauty and ecological importance of trees. These artworks are not just visual pieces, they are tributes to the irreplaceable ecosystems trees support.
By purchasing this painting, you’re not only bringing a piece of nature’s wisdom into your home, you are fulfilling a deeper need for connection, grounding, and reflection. It is a reminder of our place within the natural world, a source of calm and inspiration, and a meaningful addition to any space that values beauty, sustainability, and storytelling. |
