Metamorphosis
Every spring I am fascinated by the beauty and symmetry of dandelions, specifically their seed heads. These bright, cheery flowers brighten up the garden because they flower before many others. This year I studied their entire lifecycle, from bud to clock, which you can see in the video below. I firstly photograph the flower in all stages of life and then draw it. These drawings are then developed into watercolours (seen below, Dandelion Clock 1&2) to see how it is best to capture the structure, composition, and colours of future oil paintings. I soon started to develop these watercolour paintings into the artwork “Metamorphosis”. This watercolour painting is about how the seeds provide life to other organisms within the ecosystem. In this painting the seeds morph and change into dragonflies which is a metaphor, for everything that the dandelion supports within the landscape. The humble dandelion, taken for granted as a “weed”, supports larger life forms. The dandelion clocks feed the goldfinches as they hop around the lawn and pick out the seeds with their beaks, showering clouds of seeds across the grass. The dandelion flowers also provide pollen to the bees, so all parts of the plant support the ecosystem.
