Gaia-Sapien
Watercolour on Paper,
21 x 29.5 cms, 8.5 x 12 inches
My artwork is about the environment, taking inspiration from the local landscape in Sussex. It highlights the miniscule and ecosystems. My “Secrets of Nature” series is based on climate change; to halt and reverse this decline, the human-race need to change their viewpoint. We need to be more respectful of our everyday living.
Most people see themselves above nature, yet we are a vulnerable species, which Covid has highlighted. Artwork “Gaia-Sapien”, is inspired by hope. Holocene (the current geological era) is coming to an end, but the next era needs to reflect mankind’s change in epoch, where humanity lives with nature. The circle contains us in the future, entwined with nature and respectful of it; this is a metaphor for the Earth. It is surrounded by black, to emphasise fragility, but also referring to Earth in the Cosmos. Meanwhile a tired butterfly has landed upon this earth with damaged wings, it has no colour, it is a metaphor for the present day.
