Oil on Board, 80 x 80 cms, 31.5 x 31.5 inches
This is oil painting is part of the Florasphere series, where our view of the landscape is framed by some of the miniature characters within the landscape that we do not normally notice.
Violas are tiny flowers that you barely notice that grow in wooded areas. The Viola in this artwork has been created as a window to the landscape in which the Viola grows. The Viola is reliant upon the landscape around it to grow, but the landscape is also reliant upon the Viola, which here represents all the small insects and plants growing within the landscape. The woodland is an ecosystem, and the small are important to sustain the landscape as a whole.
This painting was inspired by my many walks in the local Sussex area to my studio and home. Although the local area is mainly known for the rolling hills of the downs and the flat weald, we are bordered by woodland and forest locally. I am lucky as an artist to have so much inspiration on my doorstep for my art. |
