About the Painting:

My artistic practice is rooted in close observation of the natural world around me. Living in the heart of the Sussex countryside, I find endless inspiration in the quiet dramas unfolding in my garden. I especially enjoy growing flowers from seed and documenting their lifecycle, from the vibrant bloom of summer to the delicate decay of autumn.
Each year, I’m captivated by the transformation of poppy seed heads. As they wither, they reveal intricate, sculptural forms, fragile yet resilient. In this painting, I have semi-camouflaged these seed heads into the background to reflect their role as both part of the landscape and a portal into it. They become a window into the wider ecosystem, reminding us that even the smallest, most overlooked elements of nature are vital to the whole.

This piece is part of my Florasphere series, which explores the interconnectedness of all living things. Inspired by my background in biology, I aim to highlight the unseen support systems in nature, how a single flower can sustain insects, which in turn feed birds, all contributing to the balance of the environment.
