These paintings inspired the entire 'Fading Blooms' series. I gather a lot of my inspiration from my garden and the surrounding landscape where I live in the Sussex countryside. There is obviously less inspiration in the winter, however there is still some. But it was one Christmas that I was growing the beautifully majestic bloom, Amaryllis to brighten up our Winter home. However, what interested me was the shape that the dying flower made, which was no less graceful.
I was admiring the twisting petals the amaryllis created by falling from the bulb and hanging down vertically from its pot. I immediately started to photograph this beautiful flower as it died. It was a white amaryllis which fades to pale brown, but in different lights whites and greys pick up many colours, which inspired not only these paintings below but was the beginning of the series. |
