Sunflowers
Oil on Board, 120 x 70 cms, 47 x 27.5 inches
This artwork is inspired by the twisting forms the petals create as Sunflowers die. This oil painting shows three Sunflowers in the different stages of life, from a bud just opening to the fully open to the bloom that is fully over, and its petals hang forward. My creative process as an artist, is growing flowers from seed and documenting every stage of their life. For these flowers the change within the petals happen very quickly, so I documented these changes with photography. The colours are inspired by an article I read about the insects that see plants in UV light, turning the sepals turquoise and the petals pinky magenta.
The Fading Bloom series is not about the sadness of a dying flower but the cycle of nature and the hope that it gives because dying flowers form seeds. Seeds create new plants and new life and I love to watch and capture this process and the birds feeding on these seed heads during Autumn. |
