Peony
Oil on Board
50 x 50 cms,
19.5 x 19.5 inches
Not all of my paintings are of wildflowers, I enjoy growing in my garden exotic flowers too. The peony is one such flower. These flowers are incredibly delicate, and I often have to rescue them from the wind and rain each year. Which is perfect as an artist, because I then have them in a vase in front of me to draw.
This is an oil painting of a white peony, but the colours I see in the natural world are the ones reflected from everything around it. Even though it is obvious and multicoloured it is not the true subject of the painting, instead it is the camouflaged insect instead. This butterfly disappears into its background, it can just about be seen even on the compressed digital image. I want those that look at my art to take a second look at my pictures and discover something new, not all should be revealed straight away. Just like nature, flowers and insects are hidden all around us yet we do not see or notice them. |
