This series is based upon the breath-taking landscape of the Sussex countryside. After growing up in Hampshire surrounded by trees, the one thing you notice about Sussex are fewer trees, rolling fields and huge skies. Although I miss the trees and woodland of Hampshire, I also love the landscape of Sussex. The dark moody clouds against the bright yellow fields of rape, or the salmon pink skies of evening over a soon-to-be harvested field of rye.
These paintings are not all of specific scenes in Sussex, many I capture using my memory. I have a sky or a landscape which I have seen and been overwhelmed by, which get stuck in my head until I paint and release them.
