This oil painting is based upon the Ouse Valley viaduct, in the heart of the Sussex countryside, which is a fantastic architectural structure if you have never seen it. It is barely recognisable in this painting, from my imagination, as trees and ferns begin to overwhelm the structure.
If you visit the viaduct you will see that the land around it is maintained so that it isn't overwhelmed by plants. In this painting I have used trees to share the structure as a support whereas, in reality, trees would damage and crack the brickwork of the structure. Perhaps this painting is a futuristic look at the viaduct if it wasn't constantly maintained by man who is constantly pushing back the invasive nature, which is the theme of this series ‘Reclaiming Nature’ |
